Twitter for Marketing

I use Twitter as an experiment to figure it out. It’s a lot of noise – and by noise I mean that it is mainly distractions. Quite a few people use it as a broadcast medium for their every thought. That is annoying. (Guy Kawasaki is one of the biggest offenders – as he admits he uses it as a broadcast medium for the Guy Show – all about Guy).

Others use it to point out interesting things. But I like just reading the thoughts people have. Twitter is for short thoughts (140 characters). You don’t need a link in every tweet. But that’s just me.

Jack Brandt has a couple of blog posts about Twitter. One with a YouTube video by O’Reilly Media on Twitter for Business. (Not to be confused with the e-book, Twitter for Business by John Jantsch of
Duct Tape Marketing.) Jack also has a post with links to some of the people effectively using Twitter for their business [here].  I’d like to point out that most of people who talk about Twitter for Biz are in PR or Social Media Specialists.

Most people already have plenty of noise in their day: email, voicemail, meetings, etc.  It’s hard to filter out all the distraction to get real work done (RGA = revenue generating activities). So my advice is: Try to be grateful for someone’s time and attention. Give Value First.

AND: 37 marketing tips in 140 characters (via twitter). Two of them I often say:

  1. Define yourself and be true to that definition in everything you do. You cannot be “all things to all people. – Kathleen Morse
  2. Brand representation is every experience the customer has in affiliation with the company. – Christina Wehry
